Applied Arts Magazine honored EBD this month for the design of the 2014 MCA Denver Luminocity Gala invitation.

The Luminocity Gala is the premier fundraising event for MCA Denver’s ambitious exhibition program. The special guest artist, Mark Mothersbaugh (formerly of New Wave band, DEVO), was the inspiration for the piece. Almost all of Mothersbaugh’s visual art originates from drawings on postcards filled with fantastical characters and surreal settings. The drawings on these postcards are mainly rendered in pen and ink in an impish comic book style, of which EBD was given a huge collection of his artwork to use for this invitation.

This piece uses die cutting to create an intricate pop-up with a circus theme. It also has a riveted spinning element, fluorescent inks and came in a banded plastic box.

The July/August issue was designed by guest art directors, Jacknife. They took the theme of connectivity and distraction and ran with it — along with the 2015 Design Awards, expect to find clickbait, trivia, listicles, and plenty of furry friends scattered throughout the regular content.
