The invitations EBD created for the MCA Denver Beefsteak Dinner and Broad’s Banquet were awarded the HOW International Design Award.
HOW International Design Awards recognizes excellence on a global scale. The international design competition is the only competition that prominently recognizes winners in its award-winning magazine.
The annual MCA Denver Beefsteak Dinner is inspired by the festive Beefsteak banquets originating among the working class of New York City in the mid-1800s. The meal would generally be organized to celebrate or raise money for politicians, newly promoted friends, or celebrities. MCA’s version celebrates all that is manly—beef, whisky, black tie and no utensils. The invitation allows the guest to invite other men worthy of the brotherhood and “company of noble (and not so noble)” men. Black and white, historic-style graphics, and a box delivered to each returning guest set the tone for the masculine Beefsteak event.
MCA’s Broads Banquet is an annual fundraising event for women only – “By Broads, For Broads.” The festivities unceremoniously celebrate everything that is feminine, with a “Broad’s edge” to it. The invite came in a Tiffany Blue box with a plaid vellum tissue paper, and was sent to the inaugural guests. The box included one invitation for the guest and five invitations for her to invite friends who were “worthy of the Broad title.” Attire for the night was “McQueen at the Market” reflecting the plaid pattern used in the illustration. The traditional female silhouette illustration playfully represents the feminine, yet broad theme.
